2021 Audi Q5 Sportback

Elegant and practical, progressive and sporty: the Q5 Sportback. Audi presented its third crossover utility vehicle (CUV) following the e-tron Sportback and Q3 Sportback. The Audi Q5 Sportback is a coupe with dynamic lines that addresses customers who appreciate not just expressive design and technical innovation, but also sporty character and high everyday utility. Simple operation and clear displays provide for relaxed driving. The Audi Q5 Sportback is a real eye-catcher and exudes a powerful presence as is typical for the Q models from Audi. Large air inlets flank the octagonal Singleframe. The headlights with a distinctive daytime running light signature feature LED or optional matrix LED technology. The continuous, elegantly sweeping shoulder line emphasizes the wheels and with them the quattro all-wheel drive. The side sill trim on the doors imbue the CUV with stability and robustness. The greenhouse extends low over the body and begins its downward slope early so that the third side window tapers sharply to the rear. The starkly sloped rear window and the seemingly high-mounted rear bumper give the Q5 Sportback a very dynamic and powerful appearance.

Innovative: rear lights with digital OLED technology

Audi offers the option of rear lights featuring innovative digital OLED technology. Each light includes three organic light-emitting diodes, each of which is divided into six segments. The red OLED elements are homogeneously luminous, but the segmentation enables them to be controlled individually and thus expressed differently. Customers can choose from three different rear light signatures when ordering their vehicle. Each signature includes a dynamic coming- and leaving-home lighting scenario. An additional sporty graphic is displayed if the Audi drive select mode "dynamic" is chosen. If another vehicle approaches the stationary car from the rear to within less than two meters, all OLED segments illuminate as a proximity warning. Audi offers the new crossover utility vehicle in the exterior lines "advanced" and "S line." Differences lie in the Singleframe, the side air inlets and in particular the rear bumper. There are 12 paint finishes and a variety of trims for the add-on parts to choose from, including the black styling package and both full and contrasting paint finishes. A 4.69 meters (15.4 ft) in length, the Audi Q5 Sportback is seven millimeters (0.3 in) longer than its sister model. Height and width are identical; its coefficient of drag is also lower at 0.30. The long wheelbase of 2.82 meters (9.3 ft) provides for ample room on board. With its horizontal lines, the interior is clean and airy. The interior lines "design selection" and "S line" give it an even more elegant or sporty appearance, respectively. The ambient lighting package uses targeted lighting effects to showcase Audi's high-quality workmanship in the interior.

Flexible space configuration: rear seat bench plus

The luggage compartment has a volume of 510 liters (18.0 cu ft). With the rear seats folded down and loaded to the roof, this increases to 1,480 liters (52.3 cu ft). Audi also offers the newest member of the family with the optional rear seat bench plus, which can be shifted laterally and has adjustable seat back angles. If necessary, it can slide forward to increase the base luggage capacity by as much as 60 liters (2.1 cu ft) to a maximum of 570 liters (20.1 cu ft). On the other hand, it provides enhanced comfort for the rear seat passengers when the seat back and seating surface are all the way back. The optional storage and luggage compartment package keeps things orderly and holds luggage securely. A power tailgate is standard. In combination with the optional convenience key, it can be opened with a simple foot gesture if you don't have your hands free, for example. The SUV in the guise of a coupe shines with a number of additional practical qualities. With its 150 kW (204 PS) 2.0 TDI engine, it can tow trailers with a total weight of up to 2.4 metric tons (braked, 12 percent gradient). Roof rails are available as an option. Hill descent control ensures safety when driving on steep slopes in hilly terrain.

More ground clearance off-road: the adaptive air suspension

The standard sport suspension features more tautly tuned suspension and damping for a more direct road feel than the steel spring suspension of the Q5. Audi also offers an alternative suspension with controlled dampers or the versatile and extremely comfortable adaptive air suspension. It adjusts the ride height over a wide range of 60 mm (2.4 in) in total. Ground clearance can thus be increased by as much as 45 mm (1.8 in) when driving on unfinished roads. During fast driving, the body is automatically lowered 15 mm (0.6 in) for greater efficiency due to reduced drag and improved handling thanks to the lower center of gravity. Another feature of the air suspension is the ability to lower the rear axle by 55 mm (2.2 in) by pressing a button in the trunk, making it easier to load the luggage compartment. The optional dynamic steering varies the steering ratio, steering angle and power assist as a function of the driving speed. During slower driving, the more direct ratio with fewer steering wheel rotations stop-to-stop and the higher power assist improve comfort. At higher speeds, the more indirect ratio has a positive effect on tracking and provides for high directional stability. There is a choice of 21 wheel designs with diameters between 18 and 21 inches.

The engine lineup: two TFSI and three TDI units

The Q5 Sportback is launching in Europe with a powerful two-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine. With 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm (295.0 lb-ft) of torque, it is combined with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and quattro ultra technology. The mild hybrid system enhances efficiency. When braking, the belt alternator starter provides a portion of the braking power and stores the electrical energy thus generated in a lithium ion battery. The Audi Q5 Sportback can also coast with the engine shut off. The smooth start-stop mode becomes active at a residual speed of 22 km/h (13.7 mph). The powerful diesel engine is not only efficient, it is also clean. It meets the limits of the latest emissions regulation Euro 6d-ISC-FCM or EU 6 AP. Thanks to a twin-dosing SCR system with double AdBlue injection, nitrogen oxide emissions are further reduced as appropriate for the respective operating situation. The urea solution is injected into each of two SCR catalytic converters arranged one behind the other in the exhaust system: one close to the exhaust manifold and one farther away from the engine in the exhaust system. The following engine variants will follow after the Q5 Sportback launch: a second variant of the four-cylinder TDI, a V6 TDI and two 2.0 liter, four-cylinder TFSI engines. Like the successful Q5, the Audi Q5 Sportback will also be offered with a plug-in hybrid drive in two output variants. An SQ5 Sportback will also round off the lineup.

Digital and intuitive: controls and connectivity

For the controls, displays and infotainment, the Audi Q5 Sportback uses the same new technology in the updated Q5: the third-generation modular infotainment system or MIB 3. When fully equipped, the display-based Audi virtual cockpit plus with 12.3-inch display and a head-up display are also on board. The multifunction steering wheel plus enables the safe and simple operation of the most important functions and displays. The MMI navigation plus infotainment system is paired with a 10.1-inch touch display. Its home screen is customizable; the natural language voice control uses the knowledge of the cloud and can be activated by either pressing a button on the steering wheel or by saying "Hey Audi." Many vehicle settings can be put into individual user profiles and stored online on the myAudi customer portal. Each authorized user can access them for any Audi models appropriately equipped. This variant of the Q5 also uses the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet. Local hazard alerts warn the driver of broken down vehicles, accidents, the ends of traffic jams, slippery roads and fog. Online traffic sign information shows current and temporary speed limit signs or displays. On-street parking indicates how likely it is to find a free parking spot on the street and provides additional information such as prices or residents-only restrictions. The myAudi app tightly connects the car with the customer's smartphone. Optional hardware modules such as the Audi phone box or the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System supplement the infotainment system.

Helpful and efficient: the driver assist systems

The Audi Q5 Sportback is equipped with numerous driver assist systems organized into three packages. The adaptive cruise assist can take over accelerating, decelerating and keeping in lane for the driver in many situations. The driver only has to touch the capacitive steering wheel to maintain lateral guidance. A second high-tech system is the predictive efficiency assist. It helps the driver to drive defensively by evaluating predictive route data from the navigation system and camera-based traffic sign recognition. The predictive efficiency assist can really strut its stuff when combined with the adaptive cruise assist, automatically adjusting speed to the route and traffic situation. The standard Audi pre sense city system helps to avoid or mitigate the consequences of collisions with road users in front of the car. The optional turn assist, swerve assist, cross-traffic assist and exit warning systems also enhance safety.

Market launch: first half of 2021

The Audi Q5 Sportback rolls off the assembly line at the San José Chiapa plant in Mexico and will launch in international markets in the first half of 2021. For the Chinese market, the new model will be built in CKD production at the Changchun plant.
