Toyota has its rightful share of genius products and ideas, but this one feels long overdue. Given the enduring popularity of car-based SUVs, we're stunned no one thought to raise up the venerable Corolla sedan a few inches, add a liftgate and call it a Corolla crossover. Until now. The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross forges its dependable compact car namesake with the utility of the larger RAV4 counterpart.

The Corolla Cross provides suitable comfort for the daily grind. It absorbs most road bumps without trouble, though on occasion can feel a bit too soft and floaty if the road has consistent undulations. The front seats have decent cushioning but come up a bit short on thigh support for taller drivers. The rear seatbacks are set at a comfortable degree of recline.

The Corolla Cross comes with a solid number of driver assist features. The base model is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 that includes features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Most of the system performed as expected during our testing, and we didn't experience any false alarms. The adaptive cruise's following distance is tuned a bit too conservatively to operate effectively in rush-hour traffic, however. Be ready for other drivers to pull in front of you.

The Corolla Cross is a vehicle of necessity, not something you buy for emotional satisfaction. It'll serve you well in your daily needs as a practical and comfortable SUV, but it's quite uninspiring to drive. Other than being an all-new model from Toyota, the Corolla Cross doesn't stand out.
