2022 MINI Countryman

2022 MINI Countryman

Parked next to the quirky British brand's original compact car, the 2022 Mini Cooper Countryman looks colossal. It's clearly more of a crossover than a compact, but that's what the market wants. Countryman also offers a wide range of decals and color combinations. Too bad we're unimpressed by its powertrains, which range from a weak 134hp three-cylinder to a speedy, albeit pricey, plug-in hybrid. The larger Mini handles some other subcompact luxury vehicles better than the, but isn't as nimble as the regular Mini Cooper or Clubman station wagon. Those willing to forgive the Countryman for its stiff ride will appreciate the comfy rear seat but miss out on the full Mini experience.

Engine

The Countryman family consists of three different power units. The base engine is a 134-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder that doesn't have the power by any authority to move the crossover more than 3,300 pounds. The Cooper S has a more powerful 189bhp supercharged four-cylinder engine, but it still doesn't give you the dizziness we want. The plug-in hybrid model is the fastest non-JCW Countryman we've tested, but it's also the most expensive.Non-hybrid front-wheel drive versions feature a dynamic seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; All-wheel drive models get an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Countryman's stoic demeanor isn't bad; He differs only in attitude from the  other minis who are unconditionally funny. It's worth noting that none of our test vehicles came equipped with the Mini's adjustable dampers, which may help offset the sometimes harsh ride quality we experience.
